Jean Millington and Brie Howard Darling (Fanny/Fanny Walked the Earth) were back near their hometown of Sacramento, California to film a super secret project that is part of the new documentary Fanny: The Right To Rock.

A film by Bobbi Jo Hart, the documentary will have it’s world premiere at Hot Docs and is scheduled for various festivals in Canada – including Doxa Vancouver with U.S. dates being announced in May. WiMN member Myki Angeline was on hand to talk with these two women who shared just a bit about what the documentary means to them, and what this 50 year journey of being a band has been like!

Fanny Walked the Earth, often dubbed as the “Godmothers of Chick Rock,” is an installment of Fanny, the first female band to sign and release a full studio album under a major label in the mid-1960’s. The band consists of sisters June and Jean Millington who come from the Philippines and friend Brie Howard Darling, who left the band early on, but later joined to form Fanny Walk the Earth. June is the guitarist, Jean is on bass, and Brie Darling is the drummer.

“FANNY WALKED THE EARTH CONVEYS THE SAME EFFERVESCENT SPIRIT THE 1970S FANNY POSSESSED; THESE WOMEN SEE NO NEED TO SIT ON STOOLS AND WAX GENTLE ABOUT THEIR POSITION AS ROCK ‘N’ ROLL ELDERS…” ANN POWERS, NPR MUSIC

Fanny was founded in the early 60’s in Sacramento, California and were the first all female band to release a full length album while signed to a major label. Their first self-titled album released in 1970. They released five more albums between 1971-74, with a box set released in 2002 on Casablanca Records. In 2016 they reformed as Fanny Walked The Earth, releasing their first album in over 40 years. Fanny Walked The Earth was released March 2018. We honored Fanny Walked The Earth at the 2018 She Rocks Awards during the NAMM Show at the House of Blues in Anaheim, Ca.
