Ashley Kervabon Creates A Networking Hub For Women In Music With #WomenCrush

By Myki Angeline

When you are a musician, it is often a challenge finding local venues and open mics to showcase your talent.  Being a woman in this male-dominating industry is even more challenging. You find yourself having to work twice as hard to prove you belong and seek out other women artists to befriend. Women who may already know the scene and can help you break into it.

Enter singer and songwriter Ashley Kervabon.

This New York native relocated to Portland, Oregon in 2015.  New to the scene, she sought out other female musicians to make friends and learn more about Portland’s music community. Perfoming at several open mics, she soon learned of a monthly open slot at the Jade Lounge to host music. Kervabon created #WCW (Women Crush Wednesdays) which features local female singer songwriters. Thus, #WomenCrush was born.

#WomenCrush was picked up almost immediately by local press and radio stations, who were wanting to know more about Kervabon’s mission – which is to create an environment of support that empowers women. To give women more access into the music industry via workshops, showcases, and more. She soon discovered a need for this on a national level, and has successfully extended #WomenCrush  to venues in New York, Nashville, and Vancouver (BC) starting in the summer of 2017.

#WomenCrush offers a complete service to female music artists which includes EPK/One Sheet Creation, Press Release & Bio writing, Single/EP/Album Release campaigns. Kervabon understands the viewpoint of the starving musician who sacrifices everything in pursuit of a dream.  #WomenCrush not only works with your budget, you can learn how to run your own campaign. All of this fueled by her extensive background in PR and works tirelessly to keep her vision alive, ” “I know that when I get a little bit overwhelmed, just being at a showcase and hearing how grateful the artists are, that makes everything better…  Once I hear them say ‘thank you’ I feel like I’m instantly rewarded. This is me working for me so I feel like that’s just motivating enough,” says Kervabon.

Fiero Flair’s Vision to Empower Women Comes To Fruition At The Girl Power! Women’s Music Industry Conference

By Myki Angeline

I truly enjoy attending conferences and workshops that are created with the vision to motivate and empower women.  With so many women working in the music industry, it is both surprising and disappointing to learn that we make up around 5% of the workforce.  In fact, each time I am interviewing a woman in music, I often learn that they are still working twice as hard to earn the same respect and acknowledgement as men do in the same field.

Which is why conferences like this one are so vital to our music community. They bring so many influential working women together under one roof to share their experiences, stories, and valuable expertise.  The Girl Power! Women’s Music Industry Conference was hosted by co-founders Kerry and Gian Fiero of Fiero Flair in Berkeley, California at the David Brower Center this past weekend. The event included one on one mentoring, various music industry vendors, prize giveaways, and lunch catered by Empire Power Lunch celebrating Goapele’s new single “Power” – with a surprise appearance by Goapele.

Learn more on their website:

The couple met while teaching at San Francisco State University in the Music Recording Industry Program. Gian teaches Career Planning & Development, while Kerry teaches both Career Strategies and Event Planning. The Fiero’s were astonished at the lack of women students who attended their courses.  In the 10 years they taught at SFSU, merely 5% of the students were women. Their vision became clear; create a conference that will bring together women professionals to network and collaborate with one another.  Kerry changed her career from artist manager to events manager, and the Girl Power! Women’s Music Industry Conference was born.

This was their 4th year hosting this empowering conference and the line up of speakers was stellar. Gail Mitchell, Senior Editor for Billboard Magazine was the keynote speaker, who has moderated panels for industry organizations such as ASCAP, BMI, the Recording Academy, and the Grammy Museum.  She shared with the crowd her experiences with how much music publication and distribution has evolved in the past 25 years.

Included on the 5 various panels were industry professionals like Charlese Banks (Founder/Owner of Socially Flyy), Anje Collins (Owner/Exec. Dir. for The Luxe PR Group), Kat Cook (Personal and Tour Manager for Tracey Champman/Taj Mahal), Maya Finlay (Audio Engineer, Musician, Producer), Dawn Holliday (prev GM for Slims and Great American Music Hall), Rose Kirkland (senior talent buyer, Live Nation Northern CA), Aisah Gemora (Op. Mgr for Shoreline Ampitheater), Victoria Theodore (Singer, Music Instructor, Composer, Pianist for Stevie Wonder/Beyonce), Sindee Levin (Entertainment Attorney), Sarah Sexton (owner of Oaktown Indie Mayhem Records), Pam Warren (Turntablist/Recording Artist), Heidi Trefethen (Classical/Jazz Hornist and studio/live Sound Engineer), and Anasa Troutman (Founder/CEO at eLOVEate), and many more.

I not only had a chance to listen to a couple of the panels and just absorb the knowledge and inspiration from these outstanding women in the field, but I also had the privilege of interviewing a few of them.  My heart just burst with excitement and motivation being in a room full of industry professionals and watching the networking and community between everyone.  I highly encourage all women who are interested in music as a career, and those who already have a career going to attend this event.  Conferences like this one give you the tools you need to succeed.

Musician Gabriela Quintero Auctions Her Personal Yamaha Guitar For Benefit

You might have already seen Rodrigo y Gabriela, the internationally acclaimed Mexican acoustic rock guitar duo, highlighting the case of Luis Angel Quintana Saucedo and Ilse Elizabeth Ramirez Reyes, a young couple who were arrested during a police raid on their apartment in Mexico. The raid targeted criminals who happened to be living in the same building.  Luis and Ilse are respected members of the artistic community in Zihuatanejo and are not involved in criminality of any kind. Luis is the bass player for Xpresion Inmune, a local rock group while Ilse worked at a bank before returning to Zihuatenejo so they could move in together.  The couple continue to be held in a dangerous federal prison.

Rod and Gab have been keen to highlight the plight of this young couple through social media posts urging people to sign the petition and through their participation in a special fundraising benefit concert held in Zihuatenejo .  As part of their continued support for the campaign to secure their release Gabriela is offering for auction her personal Yamaha NX custom shop guitar.

This is the guitar which Gabriela Quintero has used to record the 11:11, Area 52 and 9 Dead Alive albums.   It is her personal primary guitar which has been by her side for the last ten years.  Gabriela has performed with the guitar at concerts at Red Rocks, The Hollywood Bowl, Radio City Music Hall, The White House, The Sydney Opera House, Glastonbury, Bonaroo, Coachella and on television shows such as The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night With Jay Leno.

The guitar was manufactured in the Yamaha Japan Custom shop to Gabriela’s personal specifications.  This is a one off opportunity to own a piece of Rodrigo y Gabriela history and to get an amazing guitar at the same time.  All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the campaign to secure the release of Luis and Elizabeth.

Full details of the guitar can be seen on the auction page.  Bidding is open now and the auction will close on Sunday 7th May.
