Girls Rock Sacramento Is Building Self Esteem And Empowerment Through Music

By Myki Angeline

Music is life.  It is present in our day to day routine. Some of our fondest childhood memories are attached to our favorite songs. Music gets us through menial chores, that dreaded homework assignment, and our long commute home from work. Many of us dream of playing in a band, be it as the singer or the guitarist. Fortunately for young girls and women, we have music camps like Girls Rock Sacramento.

The Sacramento Girls Rock music camp is affiliated with the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, a non-profit program created in 2007 in Portland, Oregon at the initiative of the Rock n Roll Camp For Girls (2001). GRS launched into their 2nd year, completing two mini camps and one week long teen camp in the Summer of 2017. This Fall they are holding another Ladies Rock Camp specifically for adult women. Their mission is to help girls and those who identify as girls build self esteem through music education, collaboration, empowerment, a supportive community of peers and mentors, and the development of leadership skills. Many of the young women who join have no prior musical experience. The only requirement is your desire to learn, and with GRS you get that and so much more.

Allie Bogetich is one of the music coaches who shared her story with The Octagon. Currently a college freshmen, her experience comes from playing drums in concert band and jazz band. Allie and many others are volunteers, donating their time and experience to Girls Rock Sacramento.

What makes this music camp unique is that most of these young women have never met before they start the camp. All participants are assigned to an instrument of their choice, or as the singer on day one, and by day five will have written, composed, and practiced one original song. Plus, they may have learned to play an instrument for the first time.  At the end of the week, a showcase is presented so that each band can perform their original tune to an audience of their peers, family, and music supporters.

The Teen Camp Showcase took place at the Ace of Spades venue in downtown Sacramento, California. These first time musicians performed on the same stage as some of the most recognized names in the music industry like Snoop Dog, Suicidal Tendencies, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Lita Ford, Third Eye Blind, Quiet Riot, and Yelawolf.

Crashing Atlas Released New Single ‘Savages’, A Message To Millennials

By Myki Angeline

Imagine, if you will – a world without digital access. Absent of modern advancements like cell phones with apps that give you access to the entire world with one touch. No GPS to find your way, and no iPads or Galaxy Notes to track documents or stream your favorite TV shows.

Alternative rock band Crashing Atlas wrote a song about what life would be like for Millennials without these conveniences. Says the band, “If it were to all crumble, we would have to revert back to our basic instincts. With the millennial generation not knowing a world without these things, would we be able to survive and have compassion towards our fellow human beings? Because in the end we are all SAVAGES.”

Listen to the single on Soundcloud here:

“Savages” is the first single from their new album Ascend which is due out September 22. Produced by Billy Decker (Kenny Chesney, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean) and Jim DeMain (Elton John, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd), the album also  features Rod Pires (American Wolves) on select tracks.

Grammy-Winning Artist Paula Cole Releases Her Smoky, Sultry Rendition Of The American Classic, ‘Ode To Billy Joe’

By Myki Angeline

Singer-songwriter Paula Cole has released her second single from her much anticipated album, Ballads which will hit the store shelves Aug 11 on 675 Records.

“Ode To Billy Joel” was originally released in 1967 by Bobbie Gentry, and is one of many classic hits covered by Cole on Ballads.  A double album filled with jazz and folk standards, showcases her jazz vocalist roots and includes songs by artists such as: Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, John Coltrane, Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone and of course, Bobbie Gentry.

Listen to “Ode To Billy Joel” here:

In an interview, Cole told Rolling Stone Country, “‘Ode to Billy Joe’ belongs in the canon of American standards, amongst the classics. The story is a mystery, leaving you with questions about Billy Joe McAllister and his girlfriend, and the culture of denial over the course of a Southern family’s country supper. Bobbie Gentry was a writer, guitar-playing singer and interestingly, a self-producer. As a woman of the Sixties in the American South, this was a rare and often overlooked aspect of her genius.”

Ballads is available for pre-sale here:

Cole reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1997 with her hit single, “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?”.  The following year she won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist with “I Don’t Want to Wait”, which was used as the theme song of the television show Dawson’s Creek.

Cole will return to NYC on July 24th for a very special interview and performance event hosted by Backstory with our founder, Laura B. Whitmore! Stay tuned for details.

High Love Gives A Voice To Others With Their New Single ‘No Longer Yours’

By Myki Angeline

Music provides the soundtrack to our lives. Often times we relate a song to a particular fond memory, or personal tragedy.  When heard at just the right moment, a song can give us strength to move on and inspire us to rise above our struggles.  High Love’s musical mission is just that and one of true valor. They describe their sound as a dash of Muse, a layer of Phantogram, topped off with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Formerly known as REND, this Vancouver-based alternative rock band was founded by husband and wife duo Jeff and Carol-Lynne Quinn.  The name change was done to reflect the new direction of their music.  Says Carol-Lynne, “It is our passion and vision to create music that brings a voice to those who have had their voice taken away. To speak out and stand up for what they believe in and be a part of a movement of light, love and truth.”

Their first single, “No Longer Yours” off their soon to be released album is a victory anthem of sorts and is inspired by Carol-Lynne’s own personal journey of healing and freedom.

Listen and buy here:  No Longer Yours

The remaining members of High Love comprise of Steve Roe (electric guitar) and Jordan Dempster (drums) and credit their success as a band to open communication and long-lasting friendships. As the female lead singer, Carol-Lynne has dealt with her fare share of challenges in the music industry. But despite her experiences with condescending treatment from the opposite sex, she is quick to praise the support she receives from her strong knit community. A solid team of male and female musicians, technicians, managers, promoters who treat everyone with respect and kindness.

Carol-Lynne’s inspiration and influence in her song writing derives from her own childhood struggles. Having had her own power taken from her at a young age, she fought hard to find her own strength and heal from past traumas.  With their new music on the horizon, High Love is looking to be that change we so desperately need in the world today.  Leading with love and light, power and strength.  Being the voice for others who find it difficult to find their own.

French singer Carla Bruni announced in late May the release of her fifth studio album set for release October 6. French Touch is produced by legendary producer, composer, and musician, David Foster via Verve Records/Barclay/Universal Music France.  The album is her first collection of English-language cover songs that include Bruni’s interpretations of hits by ABBA, The Rolling Stones, and The Clash.

Her first single “Enjoy The Silence” is available on all digital and streaming services. The video has already received over 78k views on Youtube. Originally recorded by English band Depeche Mode back in 1990, Bruni’s version is stripped down from its former electric goth influence and brings about a beautiful, yet moody ballad that only she could deliver, “What I like very much about the song is the lyrics. It’s such a perfect song that it really didn’t need a cover. The lyrics are quite dark, but they’re made stronger because, nowadays, noise is everywhere. We need silence. Silence is healing.” says Bruni.

You can download “Enjoy The Silence” from her website:
