At only 30 years old, composer, singer and violinist Caroline Shaw from Greenville, N.C., has defied many odds. She’s one of a few female artists to have scored a Pulitzer in music, and the youngest composer to have won the award since it started in 1943.
A freelance musician in N.Y., Shaw was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music on April 15 for her Partita for 8 Voices, an a cappella composition she wrote for vocal group Roomful of Teeth, which she belongs to.
Shaw began playing violin at 2-years-old, has been composing since childhood, and recently started singing in college.
