Up-and-coming soul artist Katherine Penfold has released an intimate, stripped-down version of her latest single, “Far Away.” The full performance can be viewed above.
“Far Away,” which details “the heartache of a long-distance relationship,” is the second single off of Penfold’s upcoming debut album, Sweetest Thing, out October 4th.
It might not be the sound you’d expect from a self-described tattooed tomboy with a passion for motorcycles, skateboarding, and woodworking. However, listening to her sound elicits a different impression altogether – as a sultry, smooth, and sweet delivery belies the rustic badassery she exudes with ease.
Born in Nova Scotia, Penfold always drifted towards powerhouse vocalists like James Brown and Aretha Franklin. She would later go on to study classical piano and jazz at Brandon University. On top of winning the GROOVEFM singer/songwriter competition, she spent the next few years performing alongside the likes of Hugh Laurie, Jeff Lorber, Brad Turner, and Jodi Proznick, and even selling out headline shows.
Her fascination for construction and architecture drove her to build her own studio – one of the many things she loves creating from scratch with her hands. While co-producing this album with David Sikula, Penfold channels these experiences and her spirited style to a soul, funk, and R&B 10-track wonder.
Katherine Penfold’s debut album, Sweetest Thing, is out October 4th.
