U.K.-based newspaper The Guardian columnist Deborah Coughlin discussed why [sadly] women-only awards are still needed in the music industry.

The article comes after the Association of Independent Music (Aim), UK Music, Nordoff Robbins and Music Week announced a new Women in Music Awards which will recognize the 30 most influential women executives from all sectors of the U.K. music industry.

The announcement was not well-received by many people in the industry and even received criticism from respected NME female music journalist Laura Snapes, who called it “needless and harmful segregation” in a Twitter discussion.

Coughlin sided by Aim stating that “It’s a shame we need a separate Women In Music Awards – but any chance to make noise for the underrepresented is welcome.”
