Jordan Gruver Explores Shadow and Light in Debut Album

Self-categorized as an indie jazz/indie pop artist, Arizona-born singer-songwriter Jordan Gruver released her debut album Until I’m Old News almost a year ago.

The self-recorded, independently produced album, recorded live at Rancho de la Luna Studios in Joshua Tree, draws inspiration from artists like Norah Jones and Lizzy McAlpine. Jordan set out to capture the raw energy of the moment, recording ten songs in four days, all of which were tracked live in the room with her band.

The album, co-produced with Grant Walker and Chase Miller captures the essence of Jordan’s early twenties—a stretch of growth, self-questioning, and learning to move through uncertainty. For her, it marks a season of becoming—figuring out who she wants to be and what it means to live fully in the in-between. It’s a thoughtful, genre-blending journey that invites listeners to follow along from start to finish, embracing the beauty and mess of it all.

In recent months, Jordan teamed up with her friend and creative collaborator Sarah Rooney to bring two songs from the album to life visually: “Ask Me To” and “Glowing Grey.”

Jordan and I met one fateful night in the pit of a Khruangbin show at The Rady Shell in San Diego,” says Sarah. “We were both visiting from LA. Her friends mentioned she was a musician and had a show coming up back home, so I went. The moment I saw her perform, I knew I wanted to make a music video for her.”

Describing the two tracks as yin and yang, Sarah, the director and producer of both music videos approached the visuals with that contrast in mind. “Ask Me To” plays with light and shadow, while “Glowing Grey” dives into darkness and reflects light. Together, they form a complete picture, opposite but connected. Sarah, aimed to capture that balance while staying rooted in real, natural environments, mirroring Jordan’s DIY spirit and hands-on approach to music making.
