Italian-based foundation for women in music Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica hosted their annual meeting in Fiuggi Città near Rome on July 5 and 6 to discuss gender inequality in performing arts.
“It’s necessary to introduce gender quotas into the governing and artistic boards of all music institutions,” said Patricia Adkins, President of the Foundation.
Among topics discussed include the fact that women represent over 50% of the work force in the arts, but 89% of European cultural Institutions are run by men. According to the Foundation, this situation is the consequence of the maintenance of male hegemony in the cultural field, where gender inequality is a real problem.
