Four Live Bands to Play “ROCK FOR RIGHTS: A BENEFIT FOR THE GLOBAL FUND FOR WOMEN” at Berkeley’s Starry Plough, March 9, 2014

Four Bay-Area-based bands will perform a concert to benefit the Global Fund for Women at the Starry Plough Pub in Berkeley on Sunday, March 9, 2014, the day after International Women’s Day. Doors open at 2 PM, and bands will play from 3:00-7:00 PM.

There is no cover charge for “ROCK FOR RIGHTS: A BENEFIT FOR THE GLOBAL FUND FOR WOMEN,” but a suggested donation of $5-20 will help support crucial human rights efforts worldwide.

The event will raise funds for the San Francisco based Global Fund for Women. The Fund supports women-led organizations and movements in 174 countries worldwide that are advancing women’s rights in areas of violence prevention, reproductive rights, trafficking, economic and political empowerment and more.

In March, Global Fund for Women will launch its “Safe World for Girls” campaign. Worldwide, 50% of sexual assaults are against girls under 16. Girls experience violence in countless forms, all with long-lasting and often life-threatening implications for health, education and their future. We all know that girls deserve better, so join us on March 9th to stand up for a safe world for girls.  https://www.globalfundforwomen.org

Headed by outstanding female vocalists, the bands will play a wide range of original music, from indie rock to pop ballads to blues, with intriguing ventures into the arty, exotic and improvisatory.

Opening the event at 3:00, is Imager, a group of Bay Area musicians who perform original songs and extended improvisations spanning progressive rock, ambient/trance, funk, jazz and other global influences. Their sound draws upon a palette of instruments and effects including synthesizers; electric piano; electronic percussion and acoustic drums; fretted, fretless and 8-string basses and the soaring vocals of Jojo Razor. https://www.imagermusic.com/

At 4:00, San Francisco-based pianist, vocalist and songwriter Rabbit Quinn takes the stage with songs reminiscent of piano rock storytellers such as Kate Bush, Nina Simone and Tori Amos. Born in Saratoga to a classical pianist father from Azerbaijan, Quinn grew up influenced by the diverse sounds of Middle Eastern and western classical music. History, myth and literature transform Quinn’s footprints into compositions that are delicate, dark and romantic. https://www.rabbitquinn.com/

At 5:00, the Berkeley-based Luminous Newts perform uniquely genre-slipping repertoire featuring the strong yet nuanced vocals of Thea Kelley, formerly of Kitka Women’s Ensemble. Songs range from soaring progressive rock to witty, political blues, and from searchingly introverted ballads influenced by Joni Mitchell and Todd Rundgren to rock reminiscent of Dire Straits, Toy Matinee and Pink Floyd.https://www.facebook.com/luminousnewts

At 6:00, San Francisco’s Amalgamation rocks in the vein of PJ Harvey, Jeff Buckley, Kings of Leon, U2, Muse and Led Zeppelin. Lead vocalist Robin Lovejoy “captivates with a powerful voice that instantly draws you into Amalgamation’s web” (Megan Lynch, Active Music). In addition to her work with the band, Lovejoy is an accomplished tribal fusion belly dancer. https://www.reverbnation.com/AmalgamationMusic
