The WiMN’s first official event: A Music Morning: The First Annual Women’s International Music Network Breakfast took place at 2013 NAMM Convention in Anaheim, CA on January 25, 2013. The event was co-hosted by NewBay Media.
Hosted by Laura B. Whitmore, founder of the Women’s International Music Network™, producer of the Women’s Music Summit, and writer of Guitar World’s Guitar Girl’d column, the WiMN Breakfast’s goal is to bring women together in a supportive environment.
In addition to bringing together women in the industry for the first event of its kind, the meeting also marked the commencement of the first annual She Rocks Awards>>, also in partnership with NewBay Media. The awards designate women who display leadership and stand out within the music industry.
As honoree for the 2013 She Rocks Awards, the WiMN spotlighted songwriter, producer and Songwriter Hall of Fame nominee, Holly Knight. Voted Best Songwriter in Rolling Stone’s 11th annual poll along with luminaries Phil Collins, Paul Simon, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen, Holly Knight is a triple-time Grammy award winner. She has written hits for Pat Benetar, Tina Turner, Heart, Aerosmith, Bonnie Tyler, Rod Stewart, and more, while having her songs featured in countless movies and television shows.
The first annual She Rocks awards also recognized industry leaders Orianthi, guitarist for Michael Jackson & Alice Cooper, Mary Peavey, President of Peavey Electronics, Tish Ciravolo, President of Daisy Rock Girl Guitars, Laura Taylor, Guitar Center Senior Vice President of Operations, Carla DeSantis Black, Musicians For Equal Opportunities for Women (MEOW) Founder, and Pauline France of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation’s corporate PR department. The awards also featured performances by Orianthi and Ali Handal, author of Guitar For Girls.
