SACRAMENTO, 22 October 2017: New Years Day, performing at Aftershock festival in Discovery Park, Sacramento, California

Metal music is a genre with a very specific fan base. Largely due to the maximum decibel sound level of electric guitar, heavy bass, blood-pounding drum fills, and signature scream vocals. And a genre with little known female artists.

Ash Costello is one of many, many women who rock this genre.

The lead singer for the highly successful metal band New Years Day has thrilled audiences and fans for over a decade with her in your face vocals and strong stage presence. Originally from Anaheim, California New Years Day formed back in 2005 and refer to their genre as ‘Hauntedmansioncore’.

The band was part of the sold out Monster Energy Aftershock Festival that took place in Sacramento, California October 2017.  In its sixth year, this metal mayhem held performances by legendary and national acts such as Ozzy Osbourne, Nine Inch Nails, Halestorm, In This Moment, Butcher Babies, Deap Vally, A Perfect Circle, Five Finger Death Punch, Stone Sour, and Mastodon with over 50,000 in attendance at this two day festival.

WiMN Team Member Myki Angeline was on hand to interview 3 of the five female-fronted bands on the Aftershock line up. Costello shares with us what her career as a woman in the metal genre of the music industry has been like. More specifically in light of the recent #metoo campaign, Costello says she still receives the ‘creepy hug’ from men. She opens up to us about a scary attack she endured 10 years ago while on tour, and how the general public’s reaction was less than supportive.  She is quick to add that because she was brave to go public with her attack, it inspired many other women to do the same. See our full interview in the video below!

The band just released their 5th album Malevolence which peaked at #45 on the Billboard 200, their most successful album to date.
